May 7th, 2013: In the mind of the gifted student: Insects

Objectives:

1) Students will discover the world of entomology and appreciate nature’s powers.

2) Students will creatively think of ways insects contribute to our society.

3) Students will demonstrate their understanding of the creature world and its interconnectedness.

Do Now: Go to the following website and blog about the following questions: http://todaysmeet.com/giftedlesson

1) Do you like insects?  Why or Why not?

2) What kind of skills or what attributes do you think are important in order to survive as an insect?

3) If you were an insect, what creature powers would you have?

Make sure you positively respond to another person’s blog post.

Your Mission:

You will be an entomologist.  You will be discovering a new species of insect.  You will make a replica of your insect, and do the following:

1) Create a model of your insect ( use any materials available)

2) Give your insect creature powers that will do the following:

a) Help it survive from predators

b) Allow it to get from one place to another

c) Contribute to  nature in some way (ex: bee’s pollinate flowers and help them grow)

d) Follow the basic definition of an insect

3) Present your insect to the school at the insect fair: (These are just some examples but if you have another idea tell Ms. Mathews)

a) Design and perform an infomercial to persuade everyone to love your insect, its powers, and how it contributes to nature.  (Make sure you write a script!)

b) Create a poster board illustrating your insect and its powers.

c) You are the creature expert-have another student interview you in front of the fair about your insect.  ( Make sure you write a script!)

d)Create an informational brochure on the computer about your insect.  Give out to students at our insect fair. ( Make sure you demonstrate their power and how they help nature.)

 e) Create a short film on iMovie illustrating the day in the life of your insect. ( Make sure you demonstrate their power and how they help nature.)

 f) Write a short story about the adventures of your insect. ( Make sure you demonstrate their power and how they help nature.)

How you will be assessed: (Your Self-Assessment Checklist)

1) Did you create a model of your insect?

2) Does your model demonstrate that your insect can:

a) Survive from predators

b) Get from one place to another

c) Contribute to nature in some way (ex: bee’s pollinate flowers and help them grow)

d) Follow the basic definition of an insect

3) Did you present your insect at the insect fair and demonstrate the following:

a) Your insect’s creature powers

b) How your insect contributes to nature

c) Originality and creativity
